Waynflete hosts international debate tournament
Waynflete recently hosted teams of students from 37 schools and six countries at the four-day International Independent School Public Speaking Competition, which has run since 1982. Students competed in two rounds of three different speech or debate events, and members of the greater Waynflete community participated as timekeepers, judges, hosts of international students, bus drivers, organizers, and chaperones.
Everyone was inspired by the students’ poise, rhetoric, and kindness as well as their ability to tackle difficult issues with nuance and respect for their opponents. Waynflete’s three competitors did well in their events. Junior Omari Hutch placed second in the Persuasive Speaking category and qualified for the World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championships, scheduled to be held in Bristol, England this spring.
Thank you to all our volunteers who helped make this event a great success!
