FACULTY – Current Openings
Technical Director & Theater Manager (5/4/26)
Waynflete seeks a Technical Director & Theater Manager beginning in August for the 2026–2027 school year. This full time, 10-month, benefits-eligible position follows the academic calendar and is based on-site at our historic West End campus in Portland, Maine.
The Technical Director & Theater Manager oversees all technical aspects of the Franklin Theater, serving as the primary lead for lighting, sound, and scenic elements for a thriving performing arts program. Responsibilities include teaching courses such as Production Tech and Theater Lab in our Middle and Upper schools, overseeing co-curricular technical activities, and recruiting, training, and managing student stage crews.
We seek candidates who can balance high-level technical production with a passion for student-centered pedagogy. The successful candidate will collaborate with directors to design and execute scenic elements and maintain the theater scene shop with strict adherence to safety protocols.
Qualifications & Skills
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Technical Theater, Theater Arts, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.
- Experience: Minimum of 3–5 years in technical theater management, ideally in an educational setting.
- Technical Expertise: Strong background in scenic construction, lighting design (ETC Ion/Eos), and live sound reinforcement.
- Technology: Proficiency with Google Suite (email, calendars, docs) and Microsoft Office; knowledge of (or ability to learn) Veracross and Magnus.
- Communication: Excellent writing and interpersonal skills to effectively engage with students, parents, and colleagues.
- Physical: Ability to stand, walk, climb ladders/scaffolding, and regularly lift/move up to 50 pounds.

Job Summary / Essential Duties
The Director of Marketing and Communications is a strategic leadership position responsible for strengthening Waynflete’s brand and bringing to life the school’s mission through effective storytelling. This position oversees all facets of marketing and communications for Waynflete, creating content that cultivates external audiences, informs internal audiences, and inspires every community member. Serving as the primary steward of the school’s voice, brand, and institutional messaging, this role works closely with school leadership to engage key audiences and support the school’s mission and strategic priorities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Serve as the primary steward of Waynflete’s institutional voice, brand identity, messaging standards, and public-facing narrative across all channels and audiences.
- Establish departmental priorities and workflows to ensure that high-impact institutional needs are addressed effectively within available staffing, time, and budget resources.
- Manage cross-functional communications projects from concept through completion, coordinating timelines, approvals, vendors, budgets, and competing priorities across multiple departments and constituencies.
- Lead enrollment marketing strategy in close partnership with Admission, including audience segmentation, campaign planning, inquiry-generation efforts, event promotion, digital advertising, print materials, and messaging for prospective families at different stages of the admission funnel.
- Use data and analytics to assess the effectiveness of marketing and communications efforts, including website traffic, digital advertising, email engagement, social media performance, and admission funnel activity.
- Develop and execute advancement and campaign communications in partnership with Development, including annual giving, major-gift, stewardship, campaign, event, and donor-facing materials that support fundraising goals while maintaining the school’s institutional voice.
- Draft, edit, and advise on executive and leadership communications, including Head of School messages, board-related materials, sensitive community updates, institutional announcements, and communications requiring careful judgment, tone, and confidentiality.
- Support internal communications across the school by helping leadership, divisions, and departments communicate clearly and consistently with parents, students, alumni, trustees, and other community members.
- Develop messaging for complex, sensitive, or high-visibility institutional issues, helping the school explain decisions clearly, anticipate audience concerns, and maintain trust across constituencies.
- Ensure that communications are accurate, accessible, inclusive, and consistent with school policies regarding privacy, student information, and image use.
- Lead the school’s editorial and storytelling strategy, including overseeing the annual Waynflete Magazine, identifying story opportunities, conducting interviews, writing and editing feature articles, shaping publication themes, and ensuring that stories advance institutional priorities.
- Lead website strategy, content governance, and ongoing optimization, ensuring that the site effectively serves prospective families, current families, alumni, donors, and other key audiences while reflecting current institutional priorities.
- Provide creative direction for print, digital, photo, video, and design projects, ensuring visual consistency, high production quality, and alignment with Waynflete’s brand identity. Conduct on-campus photography as needed.
- Champion innovative approaches to social media and short-form video, translating emerging trends into content strategies that resonate with prospective families while reflecting the school’s voice.
- Manage public relations and reputation-related communications, including media inquiries, external announcements, community-facing statements, and opportunities to strengthen the school’s visibility and credibility.
- Manage the Marketing and Communications departmental budget, including responsible fiscal planning, tracking expenditures, and determination of scope of work of independent contractors.
- Develop, maintain, and execute a comprehensive crisis communication plan, ensuring timely and clear institutional messaging during critical events.
- Prepare regular reports and presentations for the Board of Trustees’ Advancement Committee.
- Supervise, mentor, and evaluate one direct report (Communications Specialist).
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Position Classification and Schedule
This role is classified as Exempt under FLSA guidelines and is situated at Level I within the organization’s employment structure. The position is eligible for benefits. Regarding the operational schedule, the role follows a 12-month position calendar, with standard work hours typically occurring during standard daytime business hours. Additionally, this position may be considered for partial remote work eligibility, subject to school policy, supervisor approval, and performance requirements.

Education and/or Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, Communications, Journalism, or a related field required (Master’s degree preferred).
- Minimum of 7 – 10 years of experience in marketing, communications, or enrollment management (experience within an independent school framework is highly desirable).
Technology Skills
- Proficiency in Google Suite.
- Direct experience employing project management systems (e.g., Asana) and navigating CRM databases (e.g., Veracross). Familiarity with student/school management tools such as Ruvna and Magnus is an asset.
- Graphic design and digital photography familiarity, including basic photo editing and image management skills; experience with Canva is an important asset, and basic knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud applications (Photoshop, InDesign) and basic video editing skills is preferred.

Waynflete offers a competitive salary and a comprehensive benefits package designed to support the well-being of our employees. Waynflete Coaching Openings for 2026-2027 (6/8/26)
Waynflete School is looking to fill the following Coaching positions for the 2026-2027 school year.
Fall season:
- Middle school soccer: Waynflete is seeking a middle school soccer coach. Season runs Sept 4th-Oct 30th. Practices are 2:05-3:25 pm M/T/Th/F. The team will play about 8-10 games which are weekdays at 3:30 or 4:30 pm. Playing and/or coaching experience required.
Winter season:
- Middle school boys basketball: Waynflete is seeking a middle school basketball coach for the spring. Season Nov 2nd -Feb 26th. Practices are 2:05-3:25 pm M/T/Th/F. The team will play about 8-10 games which are weekdays at 3:30 or 4:00 pm. Playing and/or coaching experience required.
- Middle school girls basketball: Waynflete is seeking a middle school basketball coach for the spring. Season Nov 2nd -Feb 26th. Practices are 2:05-3:25 pm M/T/Th/F. The team will play about 8-10 games which are weekdays at 3:30 or 4:00 pm. Playing and/or coaching experience required.
- Middle school swim assistant coach: Season runs Nov 2nd – Feb 26th. This program is primarily focused on stroke development and lap swimming. The team may join one or two meets in March. Practices at Portland YMCA 2:15-3:15 pm M/T/Th/F.
- JV boys basketball: The season runs from Nov 16th – end of varsity season in February. Practices will be afternoon or evening and vary based on games and gym availability. Many practices are at 3:30 or 5:30 pm. Practices and games often include Saturdays. Playing and/or coaching experience required.
- First Team boys basketball: The season runs from Nov 16th – end of varsity season in February. Practices will be afternoon and vary based on games and gym availability. Many practices are at 3:30 pm. Practices and games often include Saturdays. Playing and/or coaching experience required.
- Varsity Swim head coach: The season runs from December 7th-March 6th. Practices vary based on pool times. Competitive swimming and coaching experience preferred.
- Varsity Nordic ski assistant: The season runs from November 30th – early March. Most practices are 2:30-4:30 or 3;30-5:30. Competitive ski and coaching experience required.
Spring season:

The Waynflete Extended Day Program reflects Waynflete’s mission—to engage the intellect of our students, to guide them toward self-governance, and to encourage their responsible and caring participation in the world. To that end, the Extended Day Program addresses students’ needs at the end of the school day with a variety of activities which include arts and crafts, sports, hands-on science exploration, team building challenges, outdoor play and exploration, walking field trips, STEAM, cooking projects, multi-generational lessons, and giving back to the greater Portland community. From homework help to fun physical activities, the program is designed to provide students with the opportunity to learn, grow, and socialize in a relaxed setting.
Location: Waynflete School Campus (360 Spring St. Portland, ME, 04102)
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Supervise Study Hall for Independent Athletic Program (IAP) Middle School students.
- Supervise Middle School Extended Day group.
- Assist Lower School Extended Day programming on Wednesdays before MS program begins.
- Be in person for all days and hours noted on the schedule.
- Plan and implement engaging and collaborative activities for the Middle School program.
- Interact with students and colleagues from a place of enthusiasm, curiosity and professionalism.
- Keep the safety of students in mind at all times.
- Supervise and guide Upper School Mentors during program time.
- Diligently track attendance including student workshop and music lesson transitions.
- Complete prep and end of day clean up responsibilities.
- Communicate incidents in a timely manner to the Manager of Auxiliary Programs.
- Provide information to Coordinator of Auxiliary Programs for monthly newsletters

Facilities Staff (4/3/26)
Waynflete School has an immediate need for a Facilities Staff member. This is a year-round, full-time position offering a competitive wage and a benefits package that includes health, dental, life and disability insurance, retirement plan matching, 3 weeks vacation, 12 sick days, 2 personal days and 14 paid holidays. The preferred work schedule is Monday through Friday from 10:00am to 6:30pm with occasional weekends and overtime required. Daily hours may be able to be adjusted.
Duties for the position include but are not limited to: performing minor repairs, assessing electrical, plumbing and heating needs, carpentry projects, event set-up and clean-up, interior/exterior painting, landscaping, snow removal, and assisting with general maintenance as requested.
Applicants should enjoy working in a student-centered, fast-paced environment which includes a number of constituencies. A positive, team-oriented demeanor is essential. Previous experience in the maintenance field and working knowledge of electrical, plumbing, and heating required; carpentry skills are a plus. Must hold a current driver’s license in good standing.
Physical demands of the position include but are not limited to: frequent walking, use of hands, reaching, kneeling, crouching, climbing, and lifting of up to 75 lbs.

Bus Driver (4/2/26)
Waynflete School, a private independent Early Childhood – Grade 12 school, is seeking qualified school bus drivers for approximately 20 hrs/wk. Duties may include route driving, driving for field trips, athletic events, and other school-related events during the afternoon, evenings, and weekends.
- Pay starts at $29/hour for those with CDL B and P & S endorsements.
- Pay starts at $28/hour for those with CDL C and P & S endorsements
Sign on bonuses are available:
- For those who already have CDL B or C with P & S endorsements, we offer a $1,000 bonus ( $500 bonus after three months of service at 20+ hours per week and another $500 after six months of successful service at 20+ hours per week.)
Requirements:
- 21+ years of age
- CDL Class B or C (B preferred) with “P” and “S” endorsements with airbrake certification preferred
- Excellent driving record
- Successful completion of background check, physical, and random drug tests (paid by school)
- Positive attitude, enjoy children, work well in a team setting
