Community service is an integral part of Waynflete's program, nurturing an awareness of the diversity and needs of people and organizations in Southern Maine. Middle School advisors help students participate in service projects, including community clean-up, food drives, and volunteering at a Headstart and at local arts programs. This encourages in students a commitment to others and broadens their contact with the larger community.

Silent Reading Period is a restful break in the day to enjoy a good book in the quiet company of others.

Jazz Band provides serious Middle School musicians with the opportunity to meet twice a week with other students who share their interest in advanced ensemble performance. Instruction will be given in improvisation as well as high-level ensemble collaboration. Students will also have the opportunity to learn how to transcribe solos of famous jazz musicians! Jazz Band meets twice a week during the school day, and there are limited opportunities for some instruments.

Any Middle School musicians who are taking lessons, either at Waynflete or elsewhere, are welcome to join a small Middle School Chamber Group to play classical music together. During our sessions we practice ensemble skills, learn from music teacher Tom Whitehead, and enjoy making music. There is an extra Applied Music fee for this option.

Middle School Chorus is for students who enjoy singing. We get together once a week during Monday Silent Reading Period to sing for the fun of it and prepare for the winter and spring concerts, as well as occasional appearances at Lower and Middle School assemblies. No singing experience is necessary to join.

This group designs and promotes initiatives that make Waynflete Middle School a safe and diverse environment. Community Builders is a student-led program that uses information from Student Government, School administration, and fellow students to determine what initiatives to pursue. One of our major yearly projects is to design Conflict Resolution Day in March.

Players of all abilities are welcome to join us to learn and improve their knowledge of chess.

This activity focuses on solving word puzzles, two-dimensional puzzles, and other problems to build and exercise our brain power.

If you love to read, and to talk about what you read, join us! We will be reading and discussing several titles from the Maine Student Book Award nominee list. You will also have the opportunity to suggest other books to fellow Club members.

Word Works is an activity for both writers and artists. We write lively language, draw vivid language, paint vibrant language, mess around with words on the computer, post poetry in unexpected places, and generally make words come ALIVE through display and performance.

The Middle School government is made up of representatives from each class that are chosen by their peers. They gather and carry out suggestions for Middle School activities; serve as a liaison to School administration with concerns or questions about policies; interview teaching candidates; and share responsibility with Community Builders for community service activities.
