Upper School students are required to participate in an athletic activity during all three seasons (seniors may take one season off). To fulfill this requirement, students may choose between competitive athletics, physical education options, and the Individualized Athletic Program (not available in Ninth Grade).

Competitive Athletics
Upper School boys' and girls' athletics stresses development of sportsmanship, skills, and team strategies. All students who try out will make either the varsity, junior varsity, or freshman squads. Practices are held during and after school and games are scheduled on Saturdays on a regular basis.

Physical Education Options
Physical education options are an integrated part of Waynflete's athletic program, and are geared toward students interested in physical activities outside of interscholastic competition. We offer a wide range of always-changing options including fitness, intramurals, dance, ultimate frisbee, weight training, yoga, and bowling. Physical education options take place on Tuesdays and Fridays during school hours.

Individualized Athletic Program (IAP)
A third choice for Upper School students is individualized athletics. This allows students to pursue activities of special interest that are not offered by the school. IAP activities vary, but have included figure skating, mountain biking, gymnastics, horseback riding, and swimming. Proposals for individualized programs must be submitted prior to the start of each season and approved by the Athletic Director, the Head of the Upper School, and the student's advisor and parents. A more thorough description and application for IAPs can be found here.
